Charlotte Welsh’s introduction to fashion after uni began in production, working for young emerging designers typically focussing on sewing and patternmaking. From production, she wanted to gain more experience in ethical fashion and began to explore sustainable brands and their way of working with fabric and gaining knowledge of ways we can reduce waste and harm to the environment. Welsh realized this was an area of the industry she wanted to focus on and so she explored sustainable markets which led her to ASOS marketplace. Welsh currently manages the vintage department and account manages the top brands on site. She also has an online boutique reworking vintage pieces by painting images and text.
A typical day at ASOS?
A typical day at ASOS involves working with boutiques – either via email, phone, or face to face visits. My role is to help boutiques grow. So I provide guidance and work with sellers to develop their imagery, product, styling. Also providing insight on suppliers, trends and cementing brand identity with each boutique to help them know their customer and perfect their overall brand image. I also have regular meetings with the vintage team to come up with new, exciting and relevant campaigns to drive boutiques’ sales.
What’s your tip for a perfect Christmas outfit?
It’s hard to find the perfect Christmas outfit- my advice is not to leave it too late. It’s also a great time to have a look at what you already have. This year I started it quite late and had a proper rummage through my wardrobe and found a dress I bought ages ago that I haven’t worn. It’s purple and metallic, very Christmassy. Also, don’t forget how busy stores are at this time of year. I avoid the queues by shopping online. Another tip, if you are worried about someone else going for the same outfit as you, check some vintage sites. If you find something you like it’ll be a one-off, so you won’t have a fear of matching with someone.
What’s on top of your wish list this year?
I’ve been trying to get some of the off white x Nike Blazers forever. So a pair of those would be great, in size 5.
What is your everyday uniform?
That’s a hard question. Always trainers or platforms. Always a print of some form. Always big earrings. The rest is a mixture and depends on my mood.
Three words that describe your style?
Random. Oversized. Colourful.
Do you have any ASOS-insider shopping tips for us?
Definitely, check new in as much as possible. New items are added daily. Search for something, in particular, I usually type something in like ‘polka dot’ and there’s always lots of relevant product.
Have a look at men’s sections and edits too. If you like some men’s brands like me and are a fan of oversized pieces.
